The Niagara Coastal Community Collaborative (NCCC) is the Swim Guide affiliate that established the Lake Erie – Niagara citizen science monitoring hub with Swim Drink Fish. The NCCC’s goal is to optimize and expand local action to build a healthy and resilient coastal ecosystem, supporting the community’s economic, recreational, and spiritual needs. Established in 2017, The Collaborative has adopted a “Collective Impact” approach to coordinate efforts focused on three ecological priorities; habitat and species, healthy beaches, and nature based shorelines. The Collaborative connects local knowledge, engagement and action to facilitate a healthy and resilient coastal ecosystem.
As of 2019, the NCCC began working with Swim Drink Fish to establish the Lake Erie – Niagara Monitoring Hub. The hub first began to monitor the waters along the north shore of Lake Erie in April of that year, sharing the technical and scientific information gathered on Swim Guide. This ensures that the public is aware of the issues affecting their coastline and beaches.
Swim Drink Fish uses citizen science and communications technology to inspire people to know and safeguard their local waters. Swim Drink Fish’s apps and programs can help people get to the water’s edge. They’ll connect people with the water and with other people. Together, we’ll advocate for the protection and restoration of the places we love.
