Zhiibaahaasing First Nation Hub

Zhiibaahaasing First Nation is located on the west end of Manitoulin Island on Lake Huron. The Zhiibaahaasing First Nation Hub is one of the four Swim Drink Fish citizen science monitoring hubs in the Great Lakes. Zhiibaahaasing First Nation wants to teach people in the community about water quality. The program was established in 2018. The monitoring initiative will provide knowledge on the science and changes that water goes through. It will also provide traditional knowledge for youth, to help them learn more about the importance of water.

Chelsea Antoine and Jonathan Riberdy run the program in Zhiibaahaasing First Nation. They sample the Gaanogwong Apgishmok beach, Cockburn Beach 1 (Rocky Beach), Cockburn Beach 2 (Sandy Bay). The two locations (Rocky Beach, and Sandy bay) on Cockburn island are not currently being sampled because of transportation issues caused by COVID-19. 

Chelsea has a background in Water Quality Science and Jonathan is Zhiibaahaasing’s Water Plant Operator. They make a great team, educating people in science and changes in water. All the results will be posted on Swim Guide and will be accessible to the public, to show people freshwater data and its changes. Results will also be posted on the Zhiibaahaasing FN Facebook page, and at the band office.
