At the New River Conservancy, it is our honor and mission to protect the waters, woodlands, and wildlife of the New River watershed. Born in 1962 from the years-long fight to save the New River from proposed dams, the New River’s advocates resulted in permanent protection, with 26 miles ultimately designated a National Wild and Scenic River. We now encompass the entirety of the New River through North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.
The New River watershed is home to some of the most biologically diverse species in the world — and its health is interconnected with our own. As a knowledgeable, grateful and passionate protector, the New River Conservancy uses land preservation strategies and science-based restoration programs to protect this irreplaceable national treasure that connects and feeds us — mind, body, and soul.
New River Water Watchers (NRWW) relies on trained and recertified volunteers
annually to observe, collect, and report water quality data. Each volunteer is supplied with sampling kits and equipment for data collection throughout the year. NRWW operates under state-approved quality control and assurance plans (also known as QAPPs, or Quality Assurance Project Plans) approved in NC and VA. Water sample results are entered into the NRC’s database and submitted to state agencies. NRC hosts a website to share the data publicly and the monitored sites are displayed on a map with the data in a graph format. To date, NRWW has trained 100 volunteer monitors and collected data from 80 sites throughout the watershed.
